Tom Kerridge gathered the best foodie offering across the UK and locally and returned to Bath in the blazing sunshine to host a wonderful weekend of music and family fun. We can’t wait to do it all again in 2020.
Bath Christmas Market still proving it’s one of the biggest and best across the country and 2019 was no exception with a stellar cast of artisans and makers teasing us with their incredible offerings as well as food and drink aplenty.
The finale weekend saw Paloma Faith, Sophie Ellis Bexter headlining a packed-out Recreation Ground in June bringing the pop to Bath in a wonderful celebration of the arts signalling the end of the Bath Festivals; with bigger and better promised for 2020.
Early in the year the sell-out Bath Half Marathon saw a chilly 13.1 miles around Bath supported by excited and noisy crowds across the course. Winners Kate Reed and Chris Thompson demonstrated the calibre of runners attracted to the race together with the tenacity of thousands of brilliant ‘fun’ runners raising thousands for charities. And who could forget the incredible Harmonie Rose running across the line in her Wonder Woman outfit. Not a dry eye in the house!
5. Bath Rugby – The Clash Bath
Rugby fans went to Twickenham in their thousands in April for its annual takeover of England’s Rugby’s HQ. The memorable West Country derby against Bristol saw a win for Bath, celebrated by those boys from the west, The Wurzels; surely the only way to celebrate! Those boys also showed up at Bath Racecourse because you can never have too much of The Wurzel’s!!
The Bath Carnival shook things up this summer with their colourful and inclusive display of dance and music around the city culminating in a lively party at Sydney Gardens and then onwards to Komedia with the excellent Jamba de Samba. We can’t wait to do it all again.
7. Bridgerton/Netflix filming
Various programme’s including the Netflix period drama Bridgerton used Bath as their stage-set this year, with the rumour mill going wild that Julie Andrews was in town! Parts of Bath were transported back to the 18th century and the tourists and residents alike enjoyed seeing behind the scenes. You can spot Bath on Bridgerton sometime next year with the date eagerly anticipated.
More costume drama fun was had this year with the annual Jane Austen Festival including the traffic-stopping regency costume parade through the cobbled streets of Bath just as the city’s most famous author resident once would have promenaded.
9. Bath on Ice/Bath on the Beach
At either end of the year Victoria Park had it’s annual and brilliant transformations to both beach and then ice rink. With a roasting hot summer Bath was gifted a besides-the-sea experience with cocktails, parasols and volleyball; something summery for all the family. Likewise, Bath on Ice, which boats a brilliant apres-ski bar and a family friendly ice-skating rink, wood-fire pizzas and plenty of cosy corners for de-frosting following a spin on the ice. Both creating many memories for Bathonian’s and visitors to the city for years to come.
10. Michael Buble
And everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news that Michael Buble will sing on the Royal Crescent in 2020……Bath, attracting the very best global entertainers.
