Keeping Cool in Bath

As temperatures soar across Bath and nights begin to get hotter and stickier, we thought we'd run down some of our favourite conventional and not so conventional ways to keep your cool during the heatwave.

1. Splash Your Wrists with Cold Water

Every couple of hours or so run each of your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds. This is a much more effective way of cooling yourself down than by fanning yourself with your hands. Because one of the body’s main veins passes through your wrists, the cold water will help to cool your blood thus cooling your body down faster.

2. Take a Tepid Bath or Shower

If like us, you're struggling to sleep at night, take a luke warm bath or shower just before bedtime. We're sure you'll agree that a cold shower sounds a lot more appealing in this climate, but your body actually generates more heat after a cold shower to compensate for the heat loss.

3. Avoid Alcohol

Although you'd probably prefer an ice cold cider or a refreshing jug of Pimms over a glass of mineral water. Alcohol dehydrates the body - leaving you hot and bothered. If you'd rather something with a little more flavour, low-sugar fizzy drinks are a great alternative too, just make sure to avoid beverages high in caffeine. Drinks life coffee and coke will only increase the metabolic heat in your body.

4. Eat A Curry

Spicy foods like curries and chillies can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, which cools the body down.

5. Stay Low

If you can help it, only use the lower levels of your house, hot air rises, so to feel cooler, hang out in rooms on the first floor. To make your upstairs slightly more bearable, leave your attic hatch ajar and bedroom doors open, this will give the hot air trapped upstairs somewhere to go and probably give you a better night's sleep too.

6. Place Frozen Water Bottles In Front of Fans

To avoid your fan merely circulating warm air around the room. Freeze a couple of water bottles and place them in front of a fan. The water in the bottle will melt, chilling the air as it blows towards you.

7. Place Cucumber Slices on Your Body

One of the best ways to cool down in bed is to place thin slices of cucumber all over your body. This trick can be particularly helpful if you're trying to sleep during a hot, humid night and need some extra help cooling off

8. Fill A sock Full of Rice

Let's face it, ice can be uncomfortable on skin or melt far too quickly, a quirky alternative is to is to fill up an old sock with plain, dry white rice and pop it in the freezer. It's cost effective and you don't have to worry about melting or leaks. Although rice itself doesn't have any "magical properties, it's useful because, even when frozen, it's pretty easy to mould it to fit your body.

9. Close Your Curtains

To stop your house heating up like a greenhouse whilst you’re out, keep your curtains drawn.

10. Eat Little and Often

Large meals are harder for your body to break down, meaning your body will have to work harder, increasing metabolic heat. A good tip is to avoid foods that are high in protein and to eat little and often.

These are some of our favourite tips, but we'd love to hear some of yours too. Comment below how you manage to beat the heat.
