Anthony Watson and Jonathan Joseph to Lead England to World Cup Glory in 2019?

It has been common knowledge for some time now that Anthony Watson and Jonathan Joseph would both miss England’s November internationals through injury. However, the Bath duo should be back in action and ready to go ahead of the 2019 Rugby World Cup – Joseph is expected back before Christmas whilst Watson is targeting a return after the Six Nations.

England have failed to inspire confidence for most of 2018, losing three of their five Six Nations games before suffering a series defeat in South Africa. Watson has been out since rupturing his Achilles tendon in March’s Six Nations loss against Ireland whilst Joseph has been sidelined since twisting his ankle whilst playing for Bath in April. England fans will be hoping to see both men back to full fitness ahead of the 2019 World Cup.

The Bath duo have been central to England’s success in recent years, combining for 32 tries in 73 international appearances. Eddie Jones is a big fan of both players but Watson in particular has shone during the Australian’s tenure at Twickenham. Capable playing out on the wing or switching to full-back, Watson is versatile and that is one of Jones’ favourite traits.

If anyone can bounce back from a disappointing campaign, it is England. Jones is fortunate enough to have a deep talent pool at his disposal and his squad selection will be key next year. Taking the likes of Jonathan Joseph and Anthony Watson, despite their injury issues, could be the difference between success and failure in Japan. Experience is so important at this level and both players are capable of making an impact on the biggest stage of all.

According to the latest rugby union odds with bet365, England are 9/1 to claim a second Rugby World Cup win next year. Joseph is a big game player; three scores in separate games against Australia support that statement. Meanwhile, Watson is still just 24 years old but he has gained a wealth of experience. He is one of those players that can change a game in the blink of an eye and the Bath winger should make the squad if fully fit.

Meanwhile, Bath will have to cope without both players for the foreseeable future. After a slow start to the Premiership campaign, Bath are starting to put together a run of form and a strong second half of the season awaits if Joseph returns. Defeat to Harlequins in their first Premiership Rugby Cup encounter was hardly ideal but Bath have the tenacity and hunger to get back to their brilliant best. Write Bath off at your peril.

Anthony Watson is one of Eddie Jones’ favourites and he should make it back into the England fold before the 2019 Rugby World Cup. A setback could end his chances of featuring for his country in Japan but Jonathan Joseph should definitely be on the plane. For now, both men will be keeping an eye on their compatriots in the autumn internationals over the next month or so. England will need everybody fighting fit and raring to go if they are to topple the All Blacks.
