TGt Meets... Louise Prynne

In this series of TGt Meets... we speak to those in the business world about how major decisions like leaving the European Union has impacted us here in Bath. We also touch on what the election of Donald Trump may mean for business here in the UK. This time it's the turn of Louise Prynne, Chief Executive of the Bath Business Improvement District.

What changes have you experienced since the UK voted leave in the EU Referendum?
The impact is still unclear. The Bath Business Improvement District has been established to enable businesses in Bath to succeed .The weaker pound has certainly impacted on Bath companies who export, while the weaker pound has enabled the spending money of visitors to the city go further.

Have you seen a shift in business and consumer behaviour?
The greatest impact so far has been the uncertainty. However, it is reassuring that the domestic housing market appears to have upheld reasonably well while more strategic commercial developments are being considered with more caution.

Has the decision had an impact on your business yet?
The impact for me as Chief Executive of the Bath Business Improvement District, representing over 650 businesses in Bath, will be to ensure that I keep well informed on how Bath businesses are being impacted and communicate this with our MP and leading West of England and national influencers.

What do you envisage the long term effect on your business will be?
It is too early to tell.

What opportunities do you see Brexit will have on South West businesses owners and business leaders?
I hope it will be a catalyst for closer collaborative working within Bath and the region and the opportunity to maximise new international business opportunities.

What problems do you think South West business owners will face as we start to exit Europe?
From an international trade perspective I am optimistic that South West businesses will continue to trade well in Europe. There will undoubtedly be different international trade arrangements, but overall all affected economies will need to find effective ways to continue to sell to existing and new international markets and retain critical supply chains.

What affect do you think Brexit will have on the local economy?
That’s too early to say.

What advice would you give to other business leaders as we approach Article 50 being triggered?
Trust your judgement, you know your markets better than me! Work closely with your suppliers and customers while the economic and political progress works through the system.

How do think that Trump being elected as US President will affect the UK’s exit from Europe and how do you think this will impact UK trade?
Again it’s too early to know. However, it does indicate that internationally there is dissatisfaction with the Status Quo. Personally I believe it’s better to have the philosophy only to worry about things you can control and not those you can’t, however this doesn’t mean there is any excuse to bury one’s head in the sand. For now I would say carry on doing what you do well and don’t get to hung up about things you can’t control.
