TGtB Meets... Kane Palma-Newport

Get to know Bath Rugby's Kane Palma-Newport in our latest TGtB Meets...

What is your earliest rugby memory?

I was a late starter. I didn't pick up a ball until I was 11,  so for me it was being told I was too chunky for football and that I should have a go at rugby instead! I'm glad I did.

What have been the lowest and highest points in your so far career?

I've been incredibly lucky to not have had any injuries in my career so far, so there aren’t too many low points. The high point was lifting the Aviva A League trophy with all my pals.

Who do you cite as your sporting idol?

Never had one. I just enjoy focusing on my own goals and enjoying my career while it lasts. I’m not a massive sports fan, so I haven't been brought up looking up to any ‘hero’.

What was it that inspired you to play rugby?

I loved the ethos of the game. I am a competitive person and rugby allows you to compete against 15 other men in numerous scenarios throughout a game. Nothing beats winning.

What would your team mates say your best qualities were?

I am extremely honest and believe things should be said when they are needed. Also, I like to think of myself as bit of a joker, so my humour.

What is your most treasured possession?

My bed. Training and playing is extremely tiring and I couldn't do what I do day in, day out if it wasn't for my bed.

How do you spend your time when you’re not training or playing?

I am normally either chilling in front of the television, watching a series on Netflix or playing on my PS4, or in London visiting my better half.

What's the best bit of advice you've ever received?

Enjoy it while it lasts. Your career will fly by, and these last eight years really have.

You must have a pretty strict diet and fitness regime, what’s your food weakness?

I have a sweet tooth. My weakness is definitely an almond croissant or a Krispy Kreme. I’m looking to do a dozen in an hour in the off-season.

What advice would you give to young, aspiring rugby players?

Make sure you enjoy playing. It is a game and the highlights are playing with your friends, whatever level that may be.
