Your Total Guide To lifestyle

TGtB Meets... Lucy O'Donoghue

We've been talking to Lucy O'Donoghue, nail expert and owner of the beautiful boutique salon Wisteria Lane, about trends, nail myths and life in the city...

You’ve been working in the industry for many years, when did you first become interested in nail care?

I had a keen interest in my school days that led me to train in nails at the age of 18. On entering the industry I realised the innovation, education and products were constantly changing. I wanted to be part of that and in doing so this led me to become an educator for NSI-Ireland.

From there I researched further into the industry and loved the philosophy of Young Nails - this led me to work with their products and as their head educator in Ireland for many years.

Being part of this company allowed me access to amazing professionals in the industry all over the world; from Germany to Holland, to American and Hawaii, to name but a few.

Settling down in Bath made me apply my focus and knowledge into my own business and that's when I opened Wisteria Lane.

What inspired you to open your salon in Bath?

I met my now husband and moved to the outskirts of bath.

I absolutely loved the charm of the city and thought it would be a great place to open a new salon.

You don’t just offer nails at Wisteria Lane, do you have a favourite treatment?

I absolutely love doing eyebrows as well as nails. I feel they are very important part of oneself and frame your face; “ You make brow contact before you make eye contact”.

You have a great range of nail products at Wisteria, tell us a little about the products you use?

Our main product we use is Young Nails. Which comes from Anaheim in L.A. I have been using this product for the last 10 years - and have stuck with the brand because I love their science and philosophy; “Its all about you”.

What’s the best advice you could give to someone to help improve their nails?

Strong nails are hereditary – unfortunately you either have them or don’t. If you have good nails keep them well oiled and manicured. If they are not so good come to us at Wisteria where we can strengthen, lengthen and take all your nail worries away.

What’s going to be the biggest nail trend for AW15?

Stiletto, or almond, have been big this season already, usually as we enter the autumn season clients love darker colours like wines, rich reds and greys.

What’s the funniest nail or beauty myth you’ve ever heard?

White spots in your nails are lack of calcium.

The white spots are leukonychia; which is how a bruise shows up on your nail - generally on nails where you half moon (lunular) is exposed.

When you’re not working, what’s your favourite thing to do in Bath?

Bath is a wonderfully social city – having a coffee or a glass of wine outside one of the many local establishments.

What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without?

Concealer, it gets rid of dark circles, contours your face and adds definition to your eyebrows.

Describe Bath in three words:

Attractive, Social and Fun.
