Black Nova Designs looks forward to Earth Day 2023 with new green initiative

Calne-based web design and hosting company Black Nova Designs has announced a new commitment to sustainability in the lead up to Earth Day 2023.

With annual Earth Day taking place on Saturday the 22nd of April, Black Nova Designs has shared the details of its ‘Going Green’ initiative, which aims to reduce the carbon footprint of its business activities and protect the natural environment around us.

Website design and hosting is part of Black Nova Design’s services, and the team were aware of the environmental impact of increased data processing and storage as more businesses and people adopt digital technology. All websites and apps are hosted on servers housed in data centres that use large amounts of energy to process data which generates heat that means the facilities need to be cooled. As part of their new Going Green initiative, Black Nova Designs is moving all its hosting services and hardware to Proximity Data Centres, who source their grid energy from 100% renewable sources.

This year's Earth Day theme is ‘Invest in Our Planet’, which aims to encourage businesses, governments, and citizens around the world to invest in our planet to improve our environment and give our descendants a better and safer future. Black Nova Design’s directors Kyle and Danielle Holmes have a deep love of the ocean, so have decided to donate a percentage of the profits from the business’ hosting service to Coral Guardian by adopting a coral every month. Through this partnership, Black Nova Designs will be supporting Coral Guardian's efforts to restore and protect coral reefs around the world. Coral reefs are an important ecosystem that supports marine life and provides numerous benefits to humans, including food, tourism, and protection from storms.

In addition to its use of sustainable data centres and monthly sponsorship of Coral Guardian, Black Nova Designs also has an ongoing commitment to responsible tech recycling. The company has partnered with Green Machine to be a drop-off point for old tech hardware to be recycled or reused. That means your old computers, tablets, chargers and more are kept out of landfill and in some cases are detonated to local schools after being wiped of data and serviced. This is a free drop off service.

Black Nova Designs managing director Kyle Holmes commented:

“Most of our team here at Black Nova are parents and we all want to make sure we’re caring for the planet so that it remains a safe, habitable home for our children, and their children after that. Our Going Green initiative is just the beginning of what we hope to achieve, and we’re keen to spread the word and inspire other local businesses to act too.”
