TGt Meets... Marcus Whittington

As part of our Entrepreneur Week Specials, we've been speaking to Marcus Whittington from Bath Boutique Stays.

Tell us a little bit more about your business?

We acquire and develop Georgian properties in the heart of Bath. We short term let these properties and include incredible spa package experiences for our guests.

What inspired you to set up your business?

A love of renovation of period buildings, and the unique experiences we are lucky enough to walk among each day.

What do you think attracts people to starting their own business?

Working for yourself is very empowering.

The results you think when you start may not be the reasons that keep you doing it after you've started a process of navigating all the unique problem solving you face in your journey as an entrepreneur!

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

Getting a balance between work and home life.

It's every persons challenge isn't it. But when you run your own business it's 7 days a week. I need to improve here.

Do you have a motto or favourite motivational quote?

On time. On budget is one mantra. (We don't always do this!!)

'You're welcome' is a new company strap line.

We love the confident double meaning when we look after our guests needs.

What advice would you give someone looking to take the plunge and start a business?

Do it. But research your market thoroughly and ask for some rough critique. Friends will often only tell you what you think you want to hear.

What’s the biggest challenge facing business leaders today?

Employment law gets more and more complicated.

Would you believe we had to pay a member of our team, who resigned from our company- left the country to reside in another country maternity pay..?

What’s been your biggest achievement to date?

Having tea with the Queen in recognition of services to employment was truly, truly humbling.

When you’re not busy running your business, how do you like to spend your down time?

Time with my son Oliver washes away any stress instantly. I also do some skydiving.

Do something every day that scares you a little makes you feel more alive.
