TGtB Meets... BMT Hi-Q Sigma

The 11th of September saw the glittering Bath Chronicle Business Awards 2014. TGtB caught up with award winner BMT Hi-Q Sigma, part of the internationally renowned BMT Group.

Congratulations on your win! Tell us a little bit about your business?

Thank you! BMT Hi-Q Sigma is part of the international BMT Group. We are a management consultancy providing high value advice and insight across Government, Defence, Energy and Transport industries. Our mission is to help customers improve what they do and how they do it. Our consultants combine expertise in Programme Management and Systems Engineering to provide solutions to complex problems, bring about organisational transformation and deliver business success for every customer.

What does winning this award mean for you and your company?

The award is a reflection of the company’s efforts as a whole. One major indicator of success is how happy our employees are — our staff survey resulted in a fantastic 100% satisfaction rate and our employee retention rate is currently 97% — and this award is testament to BMT Hi-Q Sigma being a thoroughly inspiring and enjoyable place to work.

Why do you think you won?

I think that the judges recognised our long term commitment to Bath and the South West, as well as our commercial success. During 2014, we reached our 100th employee, mostly recruited locally, expanded to significantly larger premises in Bath, signed a business partnership deal with Bath Rugby, enhanced our relationship with Bath University by becoming corporate sponsors of the Business School, and commenced a STEM initiative reaching out to local schools. We have also entered into an agreement with Bath & North East Somerset Council to redevelop the Bath Quays South site. All of these initiatives reflect the emphasis we place on making a positive and ongoing contribution to the community.

How are you planning to celebrate your victory?

As a company we are fond of socialising, so we shall no doubt all raise a glass to our win at our next team social event (a Halloween fundraising party on 31st October!)

Business is clearly booming, why do you think so many people visit Bath?

Bath is unique as it is not only a beautiful, historic city with iconic architecture and a rich and fascinating heritage, but it also has a real buzz and a vibrant atmosphere. Whether you’re interested in sports, art, culture, dining out or just relaxing, there is always something going on – it’s a truly dynamic city to visit.

What's your favourite thing about Bath and why?

As an avid rugby fan, one of my favourite things is supporting Bath at the Rec – I will definitely be cheering them on this season!

Tell us a little bit about the role that you play within the business?

I’m BMT Hi-Q Sigma’s Sales and Marketing Director. My main objectives are to lead our sales team successfully, develop our sales and marketing strategy, win key business and develop business relationships at a senior level in our key markets.

What advice would you give to someone looking to succeed in your industry?

To succeed in this business (as in any other) you need to keep your customers happy! For Hi-Q Sigma this means our people have to be extremely hardworking and committed to deliver work of the highest standard in a very competitive market. You need to be able to form your own opinions and be objective as our customers rely on us for totally frank and unbiased advice. We provide really good openings for our staff in terms of training and development, and in offering challenging and interesting work, locally, across the UK and overseas; so another bit of advice would be to have an open mind as to what you do and take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.
