Bath CAZ

Bath's Clean Air Zone

Read below to know all the details on the Bath Clean Air Zone, including: where the CAZ is, what the rules for it are and how much it costs.

What is the Bath Clean Air Zone? Where is it enforced?

Bath has implemented a Clean Air Zone, compliant with UK air quality regulations. It aims mitigate pollution from vehicle emissions and promotes the use of alternative transportation to alleviate congestion. Bath's Clean Air Zone is categorised as a Class C so has charges and restrictions, on entry, for certain vehicles.

It covers the entire Bath city centre, see the photo to see the Bath Clean Air Zone map.

Bath Clean Air Zone rules:

If there is failure to meet the prescribed emission standards, charges apply to:

  • Taxis & private hire vehicles
  • Vans including some camper vans and pickups
  • Buses & Coaches
  • Light good vehicles
  • Heavy good vehicles

Many passenger cars and motorcycles are exempt from daily charges for being within Bath's Clean Air Zone. However, 'N1' category vehicles are charged.

Private HGVs (e.g. motorhomes and horse transporters), coaches, buses, trucks, and HGVs with Euro 1 to 5 standards for diesel or Euro 1 to 3 standards for petrol engines must pay a daily charge of £100 to access Bath's Clean Air Zone.

Non-compliant minibuses, light good vehicles, 4x4s, campervans, vans and taxis are subject to a £9 daily charge for entry into Bath's CAZ as they fall in the ‘N1’ category.

Other exempt vehicles include those equipped with diesel engines compliant with the Euro VI (6) emissions standard, petrol engines meeting Euro IV (4) emissions standard, all hybrid vehicles, fully electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Additionally exempt are historic vehicles, military vehicles, disabled tax class vehicles, and vehicles retrofitted with technology accredited by the Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Service from the Energy Saving Trust.

When do I pay?

The daily charge is applicable for the current day only (from midnight to midnight), rather than a 24-hour period from entry into the Clean Air Zone. Once the daily charge is settled, vehicles can enter and exit the Clean Air Zone multiple times within the day. Bath’s CAZ charges are allowed to be paid up to six days in advance, on the day of entry, or within seven days afterwards.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition:

ANPR cameras act as the Bath clean air zone vehicle checker. These cameras verify the compliance of vehicles with the zone's regulations. If the relevant charges are not paid, for non-compliant vehicles, within the specified timeframe results in a penalty charge notice to the registered vehicle owner.

How can I pay?

Payment for the Bath Clean Air Zone charge can be made via debit or credit card, on the Government website; HERE!
