Your Total Guide To lifestyle

TGtB Meets...Olly Woodburn

We quizzed Bath Rugby winger Olly Woodburn about his love of the game, how he first got started and what it's like getting paid to do something that he loves.

At what age did you first become interested in Rugby?

My dad took me down to a rugby training session when I was about 6 years old, he'd tried to get me involved the year before but it was raining and cold at the time so I gave up. I'm glad that he was persistent though, otherwise I wouldn't be where I am now.

What’s been the greatest highlight of your career so far?

A couple of seasons ago when I made my Heineken Cup debut, it was a really enjoyable experience and a great match to have taken part in. I scored a try and we went on to beat montpellier.

Who do you cite as your sporting idol?

Generally, I would say that Mohammed Ali is my idol, he was a great sportsman and achieved fantastic things in his field. In terms of rugby though, I look up to players like Jason Robinson.

Who’s the biggest joker on the squad?

The lad that makes me laugh the most is Biggsy.

Talk us through your personal fitness regime...

I'm injured at the moment so I'm not out on the pitch running with the guys so I've been hitting the gym 6 times a week instead. I'll do about 3 fitness sessions on the bike and then do some rehabilitation sessions with my physio.

What does your typical daily diet consist of?

I try to get 3 solid meals in a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner but also fit 3 snacks type meals around them too. It's important for me that I'm eating enough calories to maintain my size without putting on weight.

What are your favourite things to see and do in Bath?

Unlike some of the other boys, I don't actually live in Bath, I'm based in Bristol. But I love to hang out here when I get the chance. Bath has a really nice city centre, I enjoy going for a coffee or a drink with the lads when I can. The city has quite a chilled, steady tempo so it's quite nice to escape the hustle and bustle of Bristol.

How do you like to spend your time off?

Traveling. When I've got time off I like to go on holiday and visit places that I've never been before. So far this year I've been to Mexico and Spain but I'm hopefully looking to squeeze in another trip by the end of the year.

What advice would you give to any young, aspiring Rugby players?

Make sure that you enjoy the sport and don't take it too seriously. If you've got the talent, give it a crack and have fun.

What's the most enjoyable or rewarding part of your job?

I've enjoyed rugby ever since I was a kid, so the fact that I'm getting paid to do something that I love is massive coup for me.
