5 Ways to Survive the Big Move

Is moving day steadily approaching and leaving you feeling a little overwhelmed and panicked? Then worry no more because we have five tips that should help you survive that big move with your sanity intact, and perhaps some bubble wrap leftover to pop to relieve any tension once you’re in your new place.

Prepare Accordingly
A stress free moving day is ensured if you prepare everything before you are even handed the keys, such as arranging for your energy provider to move with you, informing everyone from your bank to the DVLA about your change of address and organising for your mail to be redelivered at your new home.

The BBC has a useful list of who you need to contact here. If you know that all the small details are in order, then all you need to concern yourself with is getting all your stuff to the new property

Plan Your Moving Day
For your big move to go smoothly you need to have a clear idea of what needs doing and when on moving day, from what time things need to get started to who is doing what. Know when the moving van is arriving, what time it needs to be returned by and who is helping out on the day.

It’s also a good idea to make arrangements for pets and children, so they don’t get under your feet while you’re bringing stuff out of the house, leave them with a trusted member of the family or a friend.

Consider Popping Bigger Items in Storage Beforehand
On moving day a lot of lifting and carrying is going to occur as you pile your life into a van and tootle off down the road. But you can relieve any strained backs and stress on the day if you get all the bigger items out of the house beforehand and pop them in a storage unit, such as the ones available from ReadySteadyStore, and use it for your sofa, bed and wardrobes.

Once you’ve got all your smaller items into your new home you can pop back and grab these from the unit, saving the need for a bigger van throughout the day and having to carry all the large items out of the house in one go.

Pack an Essentials Box or Bag
Moving day is going to be stressful enough but no one wants to get in their new place and realise their essential everyday items are at the bottom of one of the 50 boxes in the room. This is why it’s a good idea to pack an essentials box or bag. Here are some ideas of what to put in it:

  • Coffee
  • Sugar
  • 1pt of milk
  • Mugs
  • Plates
  • Small selection of cutlery
  • Can and bottle opener
  • Scissors
  • Cleaning supplies (sponge, disinfectant, washing up liquid)
  • Torch
  • Tea Towels
  • Kettle
  • Medicine box
  • Toilet roll
  • Shower gel
  • Towels
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Make up bag
  • Spare underwear and clothes
  • Important documents and passports

Plan a Get Together to Celebrate Your New Home
That moving day will fly by if you know your friends and family are going to join you in a couple of weeks’ time to celebrate your house move. But it’s also a good idea to have a bottle of champagne on hand for that first night so you can toast to a successful moving day.
