Niko Matawalu leaves Bath Rugby for Exeter Chiefs

Bath Rugby have announced that Scrum-half Nikola Matawalu has departed the Recreation Ground for West Country rivals, the Exeter Chiefs.

Matawalu, who has earned 28 caps at international level for Fiji, joined Bath in 2015 from the Glasgow Warriors, but only earned 13 caps for the Blue, Black and White.

During those 13 appearances, Matawalu scored five points for Bath but his time was largely hampered by injury.

At the Warriors, Matawalu managed to get 130 points in 74 games.

“I have enjoyed my time here at Bath very much,” said Matawalu. “However, this is a good opportunity for me to get more game time with Exeter, and so it is the right step for me to further my career. I’d like to thank everyone at Bath for their support, and wish them all the best for the future.”

Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder, added: “Niko has been a great character to have around the squad, but we understand that he would like to get more game time and wish him well.
