Olympic swimmer Willis urges people of Bath to take on the Team Bath Challenge

London 2012 Olympic swimmer Andrew Willis is urging the people of Bath to get active and take on the Team Bath Road to Rio Challenge in aid of Sport Relief.

Prizes are on offer to the first team or individual to cover the equivalent of the 6,000-mile distance from Bath to Brazil – either by running, swimming, cycling or rowing – while raising money for charities at home and abroad.

The miles can covered in a number of ways – either on the walk to work, going for an evening jog or a weekend cycle.

Participants are also welcome to use the facilities at the University of Bath Sports Training Village, including the London 2012 Legacy Pool, athletics track and gym.

Willis, a 200m breaststroke finalist at London 2012 and key member of the British Swimming National Centre Bath squad training towards Rio, has thrown his support behind the challenge.

“This is a great way to get fit and healthy while supporting a fantastic cause like Sport Relief and getting into the excitement of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said the University of Bath Chemical Engineering graduate.

“Don’t worry if you can’t cover all 6,000 miles. Just set yourself or your team a target, go for it and have fun – all while raising as much money as you can.

“My fellow athletes and I are working hard on our personal roads to Rio – I hope you will join us.”

The Road to Rio Challenge is open to individuals or teams of up to six and must be completed by Thursday, March 17, so that all money raised can be collected in time for Sport Relief on March 18-20.

The individual who covers the most miles will win free Team Bath gym membership for a year. Prizes – including a trophy and shirts signed by aspiring Rio 2016 Olympians – will also go to the first team or individual to get to Rio, and the team or individual to get the most sponsorship.

Team Bath is supporting the cause by offering a one-month off-peak gym and classes membership with no joining fee and no contract at a concession rate of £27.50 to any non-members who take part.
