More businesses needed to be thirsty for change

Businesses in Bath and North East Somerset are making it easier for people to fill up their reusable bottles on the go with free tap water, so that they can stay hydrated without relying on buying plastic bottled water.

The council is working with customer-facing companies across the district to encourage them to join the Refill scheme to provide a free water station and display this with a sticker in their windows.

More than 100 businesses in Keynsham, Saltford, Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Chew Valley, Peasedown St John and Bath have already signed up via the Refill app, but the call for more companies to join is continuing.

The Refill campaign supports Bath & North East Somerset Council’s aim to achieve Plastic Free Communities status for the area by 2020.

Councillor Sarah Warren, cabinet member for Climate Emergency, said: “We need collective action to eliminate single-use plastics and increase the use of sustainable alternatives to help tackle the climate and nature emergency. It is excellent to see that more than 100 businesses in the area have already signed up to Refill, but we encourage more companies to join this important campaign. We want to see the Refill logo in all businesses where tap water is available, so we invite them to join the Refill app and show their commitment to help reduce the number of single-use water bottles.”

Mokoko in Bath is one of the companies that has joined the Refill scheme. Anna Judson from Mokoko said: “As a business we have a responsibility to be environmentally conscious and help to reduce waste. At Mokoko we don’t use single use plastics and support campaigns that endeavour to minimise the use of plastic unnecessarily. Our involvement with Refill means we are able to encourage more people to fill up their bottle rather than buying a new one.”

The link to sign up to Refill is https://refill.org.uk/add-refill-station/ and after signing, any businesses wanting a window sticker should contact [email protected] who are distributing them on behalf of Refill.
