Your Total Guide To eating & drinking

Review: The Pump Rooms Restaurant, Bath.

We sent the Total Guide to Bath Blogger @sarahfrombath to review their evening dining.

The restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and for their evening service.

The Pump Room Restaurant in central Bath is one of the city’s most elegant places to enjoy stylish modern-British Cuisine. It is part of the world -famous Roman Baths, that you can see from this incredibly grand and beautiful dining hall. In fact, you can also see the font that the famous springs can be taken from, The Kings Springs, from your dining table. A unique setting for sure! Indeed you can sample the waters too if you are a diner.

Inside the revolving doors of the restaurant, we were greeted by a big smile and having booked, very efficient service from their front of house staff. At one end of the hall is a black and shiny grand piano that was being played by a gentleman in black-tie attire. He played throughout our meal at a volume that meant you could still have a conversation and yet you could also enjoy the classical and modern tunes on offer. We really loved the ambience and would add that whilst this is a grand-setting we felt very comfortable in our smart casual clothing sat amongst a variety of people, many tourists (we guessed) across the ages.

We had the loveliest waiter, who was very personable and helped us through the menu where we had questions.

The menu was peppered with local producers, which I really loved. Bath Waters supplied the bottled water, Bath Ales were available too, Bath Gin cured the salmon starter and Marshfield Ice Cream was also on the menu. I chose a modern-sounding Salt-Baked Beetroot, goat’s cheese, hazelnut and caper dressing, and my partner chose a more classic The Pump Room prawn cocktail. Both arrived looking wonderful and were duly demolished! Delicious.

Having had a super busy day we were both pretty hungry and both opted for the dry-aged rib-eye steak, hand-cut chips with sun blushed tomato butter and yes we asked for tomato ketchup too and no-one minded! This too vanished in a few minutes. The steak was excellent and cooked perfectly (both choosing a medium-rare) and was very, very tasty…in fact, I can't stop thinking about it…..

Still room for more? You bet. My partner opted for Eton Mess, a classic that looked very pretty, and I chose Marshfield’s raspberry ripple ice cream with a mouth-watering shortbread biscuit. One word, yum.

Overall, we had a wonderful meal. The restaurant is indeed grand, but the style is very relaxed, and not at all stuffy. The food was fresh, presented well and tasted amazing. The staff was friendly and careful to check any special dietary requirements too. The menu was also very reasonably priced.

Highly recommended. Thank you for having us.
