As the nation marks Blue Monday on the 19 January —often called the ‘saddest day of the year’—Dorothy House is turning the tide by launching its new Community Map. Their interactive digital resource has been created to support, empower and connect local people facing isolation, a life limiting diagnosis, caring for someone at the end of life or anyone experiencing anticipatory grief or bereavement.
Accessible care where and when people need it most
The Community Map places people at the heart of care, making it easier to find information about groups, services, and events that offer companionship, wellbeing, and practical help.
The Community Map is accessible via the Dorothy House website and features a user-friendly accessible interface that allows anyone to search for local social and support groups, events, clinics, walks in nature and services. By bringing together hundreds of local organisations, the map is a digital intervention offering care and support to people when they need it most and in places local to them.
Whether they are seeking support for themselves or looking for ways to help others, the launch of this map on Blue Monday, is a symbol of Dorothy House's commitment to reducing isolation and providing care and support to more people in their community.
Dorothy House Strategy In 2025, Dorothy House launched their new strategy – It's Personal. Their purpose is clear: to empower individuals, collaborate with community partners, and deliver accessible, compassionate care for all.
“Giving control back to people, empowering them to shape their own end of life, getting back to nature to rediscover what’s set deep in our human DNA, all fits with the founding philosophy of Dorothy House. Now in our 50th Anniversary year, by collaborating with partners and launching this Community Map, we aim to meet the growing needs of our communities. In the end, we are just a small yet vital part of what it takes to live well at the end of life, or after a death.” Wayne de Leeuw, Chief Executive, Dorothy House
The Community Map is free to use and open to all, in line with Dorothy House’s commitment to inclusive, compassionate care. Through empowering individuals, collaborating with local partners, and delivering tailored support, the Hospice hopes to build a stronger, more connected region.
Dorothy House invites local residents, organisations, and community leaders to explore the map, share it widely, and help shape its future by submitting recommendations to [email protected].
