Hardenhuish Pupils Get Lessons in Racing

24 year seven pupils from Hardenhuish School in Chippenham have enjoyed an education day at Bath Racecourse thanks to the charity Racing to School. The charity, which supports young people’s learning and development through encouraging a broad interest in horseracing, invited the school on Friday 26th May to take part in activities at the racecourse designed to support the school curriculum.

The pupils got to see behind-the-scenes at the venue and learned how to apply horseracing facts to their lesson, including how a jockey’s weight is calculated. They also gained an insight into a career in the industry, as well as enjoying dressing up in jockey’s silks.

Jo Hall, Executive Director of Bath Racecourse said “The Racing to School programme is one we wholeheartedly support. It is a great way to introduce young people to our industry and is also a fun day out that provides a unique environment to support learning for the students. Every year, in partnership with the charity Racing to School, we host school days here at Bath Racecourse and it is something we are very passionate about doing. All the pupils have a great time and learn a lot about career opportunities in our industry. We thoroughly enjoyed having the Hardenhuish pupils here and I hope that we have inspired them. We will welcome them back again in the future.”

Mrs Lesley Peirce, Faculty Administrator from Hardenhuish School Mathematics Department, commented “Many of the children who attended have never been to a racecourse before. There so much maths involved in racing it shows them how the subject can be used in everyday life, not just the classroom. The kids were all really buzzing after their day!”

Sky Roberts, a pupil from the school, said: “We’ve been to the weighing room and we’ve been on the track, measuring things and wearing jockey’s silks. The best bit was when we got to run like the horses on the track.”
