Staying Healthy And Safe When Abroad With These 5 Tips

When you travel abroad, you can explore new cultures and experience a completely different way of life! In an unfamiliar situation, you might find it more difficult than normal to stay healthy and maybe you might feel a little unwell at points. That's why we have put together this article, to help you feel better when you next go abroad.

Get Vaccinated

Before travelling abroad, it's essential to get vaccinated, depending on where you're going. Depending on your destination, you may need vaccinations for specific diseases. Make sure to get vaccinated well before your departure date to ensure that you have enough time to build up immunity.

You can speak to your doctor, and your travel agent, to find out what sort of vaccinations are needed for certain countries. With some countries, you may not need any vaccinations, but it's important to find out about this early.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential when travelling. It's best to carry a reusable water bottle with you so that you can drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you are heading somewhere that does not have chemically treated or purified water, its usually a good to avoid drinking tap water.

If you are going somewhere that is hot, then having water on you will be even more important, as you are likely going to become more dehydrated as the day goes. Some countries may sell bottled water at high prices, especially in tourist areas, so you should try to bring your reusable bottle so you can fill up at the hotel or accommodation you are staying in.

Protect Yourself From the Sun

Speaking of hydration and hot countries, you should be a little wary of the sun! The sun can be intense in many parts of the world. Always wear sunscreen with protection that is applicable for the place you're visiting and reapply it regularly throughout the day. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes and seek shade during the hottest parts of the day.

The time of the year that you're going on holiday will also be relevant, as some months will be hotter than others, especially in more Southern or Eastern countries. Do your research so you know which locations will be hot at specific times of the year, and you will be able to prepare appropriately.

Carry a First-Aid Kit

Having a first-aid kit can be helpful when travelling abroad. Include items such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhoea medication, antihistamines, and bandages. Be sure to check local laws and regulations regarding medications before packing them. Some hotels you're visiting and staying at may also have first-aid kits on them, in case, you can’t bring a kit with you. Of course, you will need to make sure you can bring some of the items we listed with you through the airport. As some of items might not be allowed in carry-on baggage.

Speaking of first-aid, while a kit can help more minor issues, its worth getting travel insurance before you head out. As an example, Staysure offer insurance for specific medical conditions, which can allow you to get the medical services you need without having to worry about the money, should a medical emergency occur.

Know the Local Laws and Customs

It's essential to know the local laws and customs of your destination. Some behaviours that are acceptable in your home country may be considered offensive in other countries. Research the laws and customs before you go, and be respectful of local practices and traditions.

You will be able to find all this information out online through local tourism sites. You will also be able to look at government travel resources to hear the latest news about travel destinations. This information will serve you well when you're on holiday, and can help keep you safe.
