TGtB Meets...Guy Mercer

Following his promotion from the Bath Rugby Academy to first squad for the 2011/12 season, flanker Guy Mercer is quickly rising through the ranks at Bath Rugby. We chatted to Guy about his love of the game, what it takes to be a rugby player and how he likes to spend his down time.

At what age did you first become interested in Rugby?

I was probably around 8 years old when I first started playing. I've been a rugby fan for as long as I can remember. My family are massive supporters of the sport so that's where my love of the game comes from.

What’s been the greatest highlight of your career so far?

Playing for Bath was always my dream so the fact that I'm playing for the club is a huge highlight for me.

Who do you cite as your sporting idol?

Nathan Catt has been a real inspiration, he was a couple of years ahead of me in the academy, and I’ve always looked up to him.

Who’s the biggest joker on the squad?

Tom Biggs - he always has something to say!

What does your typical daily diet consist of?

One of the best parts of the job is the amount that you get to eat! I still try to watch but I eat though and try to stay away from carbs when I can, we're really fortunate that the club feeds us so well.

What are your favourite things to see and do in Bath? Do you have any recommendations for us?

I love grabbing a coffee with friends, my favourite place would have to be either Jika Jika or Society Café. Sitting and people watching over at Kingsmead square is always fun too.

How do you like to spend your time off?

The cinema is always a great shout. When the weather's nice I like to spend time up at Warley Weir, it's my favourite place to hang out during the summer.

What advice would you give to any young, aspiring Rugby players?

Work hard, and have a back-up plan.

What's the most enjoyable or rewarding part of your job?

Winning!
