Council Wins Grey Fleet Management Award in the National Fleet Hero Awards

Bath & North East Somerset Council has been given a prestigious award due to its efforts in cutting carbon emissions with innovative sustainable transport strategies.

The Council won the Grey Fleet Management Award in the national Fleet Hero Awards presented by the Energy Savings Trust.

The Fleet Hero Awards is a highly regarded event in the green fleet calendar, celebrating excellence and innovation in sustainable business transport practices in public and private sector organisations that are successfully delivering cost and carbon emission reductions as well as safety benefits and air quality improvement.

The awards ceremony was held on the 26th November at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden.

The winners were presented by motoring reporter Ginny Buckley who hosted the evening and Transport Minister Andrew Jones MP who gave a keynote speech to the audience of business and public sector leaders.

The Council was congratulated as “a public sector organisation that recognises the significance of grey fleet mileage. Their mature and thorough approach has allowed them to achieve an impressive reduction of 42% compared to 2009/10 levels. Making substantial changes to the grey fleet is typically more challenging than for other parts of a fleet but Bath & North East Somerset Council’s aspirations were clear and their solutions integrated into their corporate policies.”

Cllr Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North) Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “The Council is committed to cutting its impact on the environment and reducing carbon emissions.  Our staff are making a real effort to work flexibly and reduce the need to travel or to do so more sustainably. I’m delighted their efforts have been recognised by the Energy Savings Trust with the National Fleet Hero Award.”

What has Bath & North East Somerset Council done to win?

•A travel decision model has been embedded into the electronic mileage claim system.

•A cross directorate steering group informs travel plan development.

•17,000 miles removed from grey fleet as a result of the introduction of a car club including an electric pool car.

•Salary sacrifice scheme offered to employees ensuring the provision of low emission vehicles.

•Behavioral change achieved through free travel advice roadshows, intranet travel pages, and the development of an interdepartmental cyclists’ group.
