TGt Meets... David Maxwell

The latest in our series of TGt Meets interviews celebrating local independent businesses. David Maxwell has been a staple in the hair and beauty scene in Bath for many years, we talk about what triumphs and challenges have arisen over his time in the city.

Describe your business in one sentence…
David Maxwell Hairdressing is a truly progressive salon offering the ultimate hairdressing experience from our dynamic team of highly talented stylists.

What inspired you to set up your business in Bath?
I was inspired to set up my business in Bath because it is such a breathtakingly beautiful and dynamic city. It offers our discerning guests everything you would expect from city life outside of London, but most importantly, without the hustle and bustle.

Why do you think it is important to have a month celebrating Bath’s Independent Retailers?
Independent retailers make this amazing city what it is. Their passion, hard work, determination and fortitude would not be recognized without organisers such as yours celebrating their achievements and the diversity of the city.

Local and independent traders are more likely to provide a unique and personalised experience better suited to an individual’s needs. It is a fantastic way to showcase what small businesses can do as well as supporting the growth of our community and economy.

In your opinion, what are Bath’s top 3 ‘Hidden Gems’?
The Cross Baths which is great for romantic getaways and Hen Parties, The Ram Pub, a great watering hole in Widcombe and The Skyline Walk for outstanding views of the City.

What do you think attracts people to Bath?
There is a magical feel to Bath that is simply indescribable. It draws you in and never really leaves you. Bath is filled with beautiful architecture, heritage and culture but yet it feels so fresh and modern. It is the perfect combination of old and new with many new buildings in traditional Bath Stone.

Many cities feel overwhelming, sterile and cold but Bath is filled with such warmth, beauty and character. There is nowhere else like it in the world.

What have been your key challenges and how have you overcome them?
Our biggest challenge has been to not only recreate the success of our Widcombe salon but to strengthen and grow our guest base in an inner city environment. We have overcome this by wowing our guests with impeccable levels of service. We ensure our highly talented team are continually receiving high levels of education to provide on-trend styles and updated training on the classic looks.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Bath?
Chequers and Marlborough Tavern for their fantastic Sunday Roast and great atmosphere.

Your phone book must be full of business contacts, but who is the most famous person in there?
Ben Howlett, Conservative Party campaigner for Bath

What has been your biggest achievement to date?
Over 40 years of hairdressing experience was recognised when David Maxwell Hairdressing was Finalist in the British Hairdressers Awards for Salon of the Year which is the most prestigious National hairdressing accolade.

Describe Bath in 3 words
