Name: Sarah Baker

Age: 49

Occupation: Freelance Copywriter, Social Media Manager & Events Manager

Which woman would you compare yourself to?

I’d never compare myself, sounds too competitive. I like women who break the rules a little, who speak out, or who don’t sit on the sidelines and therefore are gamechangers.

What’s great about being a woman in business?

There are still barriers to be knocked down, makes for great goals!

Do you think it's important to have an International Women's Day?

Yes! We are a movement for change.

Do you have family (and/or children)? How do you maintain a work/life balance?

I have 2 daughters and 3 step children with my partner. We work as a team to support each others different work patterns. Previously as a single mum it was very challenging and both work and family life suffered, or at least I saw everything as a guilt trip. But I see my now teenage daughters emerging at confident young women so if that’s what it taught us then I am grateful for the hardship.

Have you ever had to give up or miss out on anything in order to pursue your career?

Yes, plenty. But things are never stagnant and there are opportunities around every corner.

Do you ever experience any discrimination in the work place because of your gender?

I hear some language that is challenging, so engrained in our culture that I probably even use it myself. But I am comfortable challenging these preconceptions if they appear, where ever they appear. We owe it to oursleves, and our sons and daughters to keep on challenging.

What advice / tip would you pass on to the next generation of women in Business?

Be bold. Be honest. Wear blinkers.

Do men ever feel intimidated by your success?

Yes. An outspoken woman is still a threat to some men.

If you could have dinner with 5 inspirational women dead or alive, who would they be?

  • Lady Diana
  • Michelle Obama
  • Margaret Thatcher
  • Serena Williams
  • Marie Stopes

As a successful female, where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Who knows! But I am up for an adventure.
