Top 10 Weight Loss & Fitness Tips

Welcome to 2022! You've indulged in some delicious treats over Christmas and now you're ready to lose some weight and get your summer body ready. Well, you're in the right place because our fitness experts at Total Guide to Bath have put their heads - and muscles - together to come up with top 10 weight loss tips that will have you feeling fitter and healthier in no time.

1. Stop skipping meals

The first thing that many of us do when trying to lose weight is to skip meals and reduce our food intake. But this is one of the worst things you can do if you're looking to shed the pounds.

This is because skipping meals causes your body to store the food you consume as energy reserves in the form of fat due to it not knowing when its next meal is coming. Instead, if you eat more frequent smaller sized meals then you'll notice that your weight loss journey will become that little bit easier.

2. Reduce your carbohydrates intake

Carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta, and potatoes provide long-lasting energy. But they are also one food that you MUST avoid if you're serious about cutting weight.

Refined carbs cause your body to store more fat which in turn leads to weight gain so by lowering your carbohydrate intake, you will notice a big change in your weight loss campaign.

Studies have shown that a low-carb diet can help you lose 2-3 times as much, so it’s definitely a great move to make to your new diet plan.

3. Drink more water

Not drinking enough water is something we are all probably guilty of doing, with health professionals recommending that we drink 6-8 glasses a day. But by simply increasing your water intake throughout the day, you will feel healthier, have more energy and find losing weight is a lot easier than before.

Exercising causes you to lose a significant amount of your body’s water content so it’s important to restore this to keep your body operating at peak performance as you strive to shift the excess weight this winter.

4. Exercise portion control

This is a simple but incredibly effective way to lose weight. It can be very hard to limit how much you eat and drink, especially during the cold winter months when some chocolate is the perfect remedy to warming yourself up.

However, by limiting your portion sizes you will be able to reduce your calorie consumption and shift the pounds without having to make drastic changes to your lifestyle.

5. Join a gym

Joining the gym is an obvious change that you need to make if you're serious about shedding weight and luckily there are loads of great gyms to join here in our wonderful city of Bath. Most operate on a members-only basis with many offering 12 month contracts to tie you in. But don't let that put you off because once you get started in the gym you'll want to keep on going month after month!

Joining a fitness centre will allow you to take your workouts to new heights with a host of different high-quality equipment and facilities available at your disposal.

Depending on your budget, you can join centres that boast features such as a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts and more, or if you’re simply looking to work out and then leave then there are plenty of respectable gyms in Bath for you to choose from.

6. Try intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting is the process of changing your eating pattern throughout the day between periods of fasting and eating over a set amount of time. It works as an effective tool for weight loss due to continuous calorie restriction.

Intermittent fasting doesn’t require you to change what you’re eating, it instead focuses on the different times that you are consuming food. There are a whole host of different methods you can try this form of weight loss with so make sure to do your research before getting started.

7. Increase your protein intake

Protein is an essential nutrient that you must include in your diet if you want to lose weight. A diet that is high in protein boosts metabolism, reduces appetite, and also changes some of your weight-regulating hormones.

Replace the carbs and fats in your daily diet with protein and you will notice your less hungry and in turn, you’ll end up eating fewer calories and therefore lose weight quicker.

You can also buy a range of different protein supplements which are a great way to get protein into your body quickly and are also the ideal post-workout drink that will help aid your muscle recovery.

8. Add variety to your workouts

If you exercise regularly then it's likely that you have your workout regime nailed shut and you're not changing from it. But what do you do when the same workouts aren't producing the amazing results that they used to?

Well, the easiest way to keep your body cutting the fat during your workouts this is to change your gym routine and introduce different exercises. Because your body can become too used to doing the same exercises, changing your exercises from time to time will shock your system.

Switching between cardio and weight training is a great way to cut fat whilst also increasing your muscle mass at the same time.

9. Get good quality sleep

A report published by the NHS in 2011 focused on how good sleep can be a key factor to help weight loss revealed that those who get 8 hours of sleep a night and reduce their stress levels have double the chance of slimming down.

This is because if you’re feeling energised from a great night’s sleep then you are more likely to stick to your diet and workout plans, compared to if you were tired and stressed which would make things more difficult. So if you're serious about losing weight, then you need to be serious about your sleep as well.

10. Cut out snacks

We’re all guilty of opening the cupboard and sinfully snacking from time to time. Whether it’s indulging in a sneaky bag of crisps or tucking into some of the offices chocolate biscuits with your cup of tea, snacking is something that happens to all of us.

But after spending your time working out in the gym and eating healthily, consuming sugary and fattening snacks is a failsafe way of reversing all of your hard work. So cut out the snacking and you will start to see the results that you want.
