Your Total Guide To sport

TgtB Meets: Gary Owers

As part of our 'Total Guide to Bath Meets' feature, we spoke to Bath City manager Gary Owers to find out all about the Geordie gaffer.

How did you get into football, Gary?

"Like any other kid really. I used to watch Match of the Day on a Saturday night and go out on the back lane and play football with my mates and everybody dreamed to be a professional footballer."

And what was your earliest memory of football?

"Probably watching one of the cup finals in the 70s, sitting, like everybody else, glued to the television all day on Saturday watching the FA Cup final.

"I remember watching the '72, '73, '74 games and it tended to be whoever won the cup final you would end up supporting them for the rest of the year. I remember being a West Ham supporter at one point for some strange reason."

Moving away from football, what's your favourite meal?

"You can't beat a nice steak. Quite traditional, really, I love a fillet steak the spicier the better, really.

If I was asked 'what do you want for your last meal?' I would probably respond 'fillet steak with peppercorn sauce, thank you very much.'

Have you got a decent boxset on the go at the moment?

"I'm not a big TV watcher. I probably wouldn't understand that question so that shows I'm not a telly addict!

"I'll watch a drama with my wife, the ITV dramas or a decent Sky drama - the only thing I'm watching on TV is golf and my wife doesn't really go for that funnily enough so I tend to watch that by myself."

Do you play golf yourself often?

"I like a game of golf, yeah, I wish I was better than what I am, but I love a game of golf - especially in the summer.

It's just an ideal day out, really - a game of golf on a sunny day."

Do you prefer film as opposed to television, and if so, what's your favourite?

"My children, and it's my wife's fault, really, really enter the spirit of Christmas to extreme levels so no doubt we'll probably watch 'Elf' about five times."

"(The children are) too old to be watching Elf! The eldest is 15 so she needs to have a word with herself.

"Every year they get worse - there will be Christmas lights competition and the music's on and oh, my God!"

What sort of music are you in to?

"I'm a bit of a souly really. When I was younger I used to sort of collect CDs and that.

"I like a bit of soul, a bit of garage, everything really I'm quite varied."
