We went along as a family of children, parents and grandparents, and it quickly became clear to us that this production understands its audience. Younger viewers in our party were instantly drawn into the magic of Neverland, reacting with audible gasps to the impressive flying sequences and colourful staging, while the older members of the group appreciated the sharp comic timing, knowing asides and moments of gentle nostalgia woven throughout the show
Tristan Gemmill’s Captain Hook anchors the production with real theatrical presence. He’s gloriously villainous without ever being frightening, striking exactly the right tone for children while still offering plenty for adults to enjoy. Alongside him, Jon Monie’s Smee proved a universal favourite for us all. His easy rapport with the audience, warm humour and impeccable timing prompted laughter from grandparents and grandchildren alike, which is no small feat.
Marcus J Foreman brings energy and confidence to the role of Peter Pan, while Holly Atterton’s Tinker Bell sparkles with charm, particularly resonating with younger audience members. The supporting cast add depth and polish, ensuring the story flows smoothly even amid the pantomime chaos.
One of the standout elements for our family was the physical comedy from The Nitwits, whose slapstick pirate routines had us all in stitches with the adults admiring the skill and precision behind the silliness. Add in slick choreography, lively musical numbers and vibrant costumes, and the production kept everyone engaged from start to finish.
I couldn’t end this review without mentioning “The Baby Bells”, the mini-Tinkerbells from The Dorothy Coleborn School of Dance. Their professional yet adorable appearances added an extra layer of magic, and there was a collective “aww” each time they took to the stage. It’s these thoughtful touches of locality that make the production feel inclusive and genuinely family focused.
What truly sets this pantomime apart is its ability to create shared moments of joy. There’s something special about watching different generations laugh at the same joke, cheer the same hero and join in with the same familiar calls, and Peter Pan delivers that in abundance.
The Further Adventures of Peter Pan, The Return of Captain Hook delivers exactly what a Christmas pantomime should, warmth, humour and moments of genuine magic.
For families looking to share a festive theatre trip that works across generations, this is a joyful visit to Neverland well worth making.
The Further Adventures of Peter Pan, The Return of Captain Hook is a must see, you’re sure to be talking about it for days and weeks to come (for all the right reasons).
