Pop Up Opera returns to Bath's Assembly Rooms

Pop Up Opera returns to the Assembly Rooms in Bath on 18 October 2018 with La Tragédie de Carmen, a re-imagining of Bizet’s famous masterpiece.

The innovative opera company aims to broaden the appeal of opera by taking it into unusual spaces, reaching those who are hesitant about opera as well as dedicated opera lovers. Past venues have included farms, museums, pubs, a hospital, a planetarium and even the underground Thames Tunnel Shaft.

The intense and tragic tale of the four characters at the heart of the original Carmen story plays out in a thought-provoking drama of unhinged love and jealousy. Actions are not without consequences, and the repercussions for Don José are laid bare as the story unfolds in a series of his tormented flashbacks.

Peter Brook has collaborated with composer Marius Constant to create a journey through much of Bizet’s memorable music, including Carmen’s Habanera, Escamillo’s Toreador Song and Don José’s Flower Song, together with powerful new passages. This dark and thrilling piece is directed by John Wilkie.

Councillor Paul Myers, cabinet member for Economic and Community Regeneration, said: “It’s great that Pop Up Opera are returning to Bath, giving local opera fans, as well as those who have never been to the opera before, another chance to see one of their innovative shows.”

As well as regular tickets, two special hospitality packages are available:
