TGt Meets... The Delightful Sausage

Ahead of their show at Komedia bath on July 8th, we spoke to comedy duo The Delightful Sausage about what you can expect from their show!

What can the Komedia audience expect from your show?

A gag-packed, quick-paced, surreal tale of a fictional northern sh*thole putting in a bid to be crowned City of Culture. Are there any tiny magical creatures in it? Yes. As well as ill-advised musical numbers and if we are feeling brave, some pretty dark jokes. This year it is a multimedia spectacle, filled with strange animations and our special brand of chaos. Oh, and a largely unnecessary sausage costume.

How did you discover you could tell a good story/joke?

Looking at us you’d assume it developed as some form of mechanism to avoid being bullied, (Amy - Ginger. Chris - Tiny, little mouth.) And you’d be absolutely spot on.

Where did the inspiration from your show come from?

We are both from and love “Northern sh*tholes.” We wanted to explore how people perceive what Northern culture is. Amy is from Hull and got a very intense look in her eyes anytime Hull celebrated its City of Culture win by paying people from London to come and perform. That was the starting point but the end point really is far, far away.

What do you miss about home when you’re working away?

Chris misses his young son and beautiful partner. Amy misses being able to wee as loudly as she likes without feeling embarrassed. It’s tough for both of us.

Do you think your comedy routines have changed much over the years?

Yes, massively. We both started as stand ups, dipping our toe into odd material in front of stag parties on a saturday night. Since working together as a duo we have fully embraced that when you write what you find funny and stop trying to please people, inevitably you leave some people behind but the ones that come with you will have a blast.

Who were your comedy idols while growing up?

Vic and Bob, The League of Gentlemen, Alan Partridge and The Mighty Boosh probably had the most profound effect on us. We were textbook comedy nerds. For a year six primary school project, Amy wrote a script for Fawlty Towers. And do you know what? It’s alright. She really peaked as a nine year old.

When you’re not on stage how do you like to spend your free time?

Amy has a real passion for zero hours contracts and Chris spends his times working on his obliques, which he thinks are a type of vegetable.

What would you say have been your career highlights?

The last night of our Soho run was incredible. The room was packed and our two sets of parents sat on the front row, looking as proud as they were confused. It was the best. Amy cried before the show and Chris cried during. Which has never happened (from joy) before.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career as a comedian?

Work hard, be committed to spending a lot of time panicking in toilet cubicles and find a decent group of peers.

What’s next for you after Edinburgh previews?

An anxiety fuelled month at the festival followed by an international* tour at the beginning of next year.

*There will be a show in Wales.
