TGt Meets...The Will Johns Band

Meet our latest TGt Meets The Will Johns Band, English blues-rock singer, and guitarist. We got to know all about how his career started and who inspired him to pursue a career in music!

How did your career in music start?

I was studying Performing Arts in Oxford and was really poor. I figured out I coud earn a few quid by playing guitar and singing on the streets in Oxford. I joined my first band "Sun Machine".

I then started a band called Cloud 9 and things just escalated from there really.

Describe your sound or genre of music?

Well I think "BluesRock" sums it up nicely today.

Who would you love to work with/collaborate with?

Actually I would like to collaborate with Jay Kay from Jamiroquai, I think we would work well together and come up with some really dirty, dancey Tunes! Or Snoop Dogg, we might not get much work done though...

What jobs would you have loved to of pursued if you didn’t go into a career in music?

I would have loved to have been a Marine Biologist, from a really early age I have always been fascinated with Sharks and Rays and have a deep affinity with the Sea. I used to study scientific publications on Shark bites and used to be able to tell you the Latin name for almost any Shark.  

Who would you say is your inspiration for your love of music, and why?

I would have to say honestly, Eric Clapton has been the largest single influence in my musical life. Not only was he a great fun Uncle to have when I was young, but thru example, I perceived mastering the guitar and especially Blues as sacred ground and something to work on, paying your dues, until one day people might recognise "your thing" whatever that may be. There are so many Artists that have inspired me one way or another, BB King is my go to. I start my day everyday with BB in the shower.

How long does it take you to write a song?

Sometimes ten minutes and sometimes years. There's a constant cauldron of ideas bubbling away on the back of the Aga, you just never know when the inspiration is gonna strike, just better be ready to catch it!

Where is your favourite place to tour?

I love touring in the USA. The Audiences don’t mind letting you know that they are having a really good time!

What is one of your favourite songs that isn’t your own?

Oh Well - Fleetwood Mac

What advice would you give people who would love to pursue a career in music?

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.”  Hunter S. Thompson

Are you excited to perform at Komedia in Bath? Is this your first time performing there?

Yes! I am very excited to be returning with my band and will be welcoming my dear friend and 'Axe Man' Benji Bartlett on stage as a very special guest. It will be my second time at Bath Komedia, I performed with The Music of Cream 50th Anniversary World Tour on the first occasion.
