Your Total Guide To lifestyle

TGtB Meets...Tom Heathcoate

A pinpoint accurate and confident goal kicker, Tom is fast becoming a well recognised young star of the game. We chatted to him about his flourishing career and what he gets up to in his down time.

At what age did you first become interested in Rugby?

I was probably about 5 or 6, I lived very close to my local rugby club so that's how I first became interested.

What’s been the greatest highlight of your career so far?

Achieving my first international cap for Scotland was probably one of the biggest moments of my career so far.

Who do you cite as your sporting idol?

Growing up it was probably Johnny Wilkinson, he was kind of at the peak of the game when I started taking rugby seriously, I wanted to be just like him.

Who’s the biggest joker on the squad?

There’s a few, Biggsy’s up there, and then probably Ross Batty.

Talk us through your personal fitness regime…

A normal day/ week is 2/3 weight sessions, plus all our rugby sessions have an element of conditioning.

What does your typical daily diet consist of?

We have a fully cooked breakfast here at the club which is pretty good, and then lunch and a meal after training. High protein and veg. It’s all supplemented with shakes here and there.

What are your favourite things to see and do in Bath? Do you have any recommendations for us?

I like eating out quite a lot, there are loads of great restaurants here in Bath. I think that I'd have to say that the rugby is one of the main things to see but the nights out are pretty good as well.

How do you like to spend your time off?

I study part- time at the uni which takes up most of my time. I study politics with economics. Otherwise I just relax and try and recover from training and matches.

What advice would you give to any young, aspiring Rugby players?

I’d say just work hard and focus on developing your skills. Making sure you have the skill set to make it in your position. Develop your technique, and become comfortable with performing your skills under pressure.

What's the most enjoyable or rewarding part of your job?

Being involved in a team environment and going through the ups and downs of a season together. When you get good points and wins, it makes it worth it knowing you’ve been through the struggle of pre-season.
