Total Guide to Workwear Style: Top Ten Tips

Group Marketing Director of the McArthurGlen Group, Shaeren McKenzie, gave us her top ten pointers on work wear style.

1. Work wear can easily be updated to feel modern- pair a blazer with a softer shirt for a more modern look.

2. Don’t feel you have to stick to a navy and black colour palette. Burgundy and maroon are great alternatives and are on trend for Autumn & Winter.

3. Make sure that if you do wear black it is not washed out. Colours need to be sharp and definitely not washed out.

4. Don’t be afraid to use colour within your outfit- a bright top with a plain pencil skirt or trouser can really brighten your outfit and make you stand out from other candidates.

5. Dresses should be tailored with structure, and should always cover the shoulders. Avoid anything sexy or low cut, and stick to a simple colour without print- LK Bennett has some great work wear options.

6. As well as being on trend, pencil skirts are a great for interviews. The longer length ensures you are appropriately styled, whilst avoiding looking dowdy.

7. If you are not comfortable in a fitted shape like a pencil skirt, opt for a pleated mid length skirt, with a tailored blazer. Petite shapes should wear a heeled shoe to balance the silhouette.

8. Make sure that your hand bag is work appropriate. Stick to classic styles in black or tan, or opt for an on trend satchel style.

9. After spending time carefully selecting your clothes, make sure your shoes are the finishing touch. A classic court with a mid-height heel will look professional and on trend. Be wary of stilettoes unless you are confident in your ability to walk in them!

10. Make sure you feel yourself. Confidence comes from within, so make sure your outfit reflects this. Add touches of your personality with accessories such as a coloured belt or a textured shoe.
