Fruean will join up with his new teammates following the culmination of the Mitre 10 cup next month which he is competing in for Hawkes Bay.
He can also be deployed on the wing which can add much-needed versatility for the Blue, Black and White.
Director of Rugby Todd Blackadder is delighted with the signing, stating: "We are really excited Robbie has agreed to join us here at Bath.
"Tabai (Matson, Bath's Coach) and I know him very well from his time at the Crusaders and he is the kind of player we know will fit right in."
Fruean himself said of the move: "I am really looking forward to getting started.
"It will be a new challenge for me - the Aviva Premiership is such a tough league, but Bath have had a good start (three wins, one loss) and I know that being over there and competing in it will bring the best out of me."
