Wine of the Month: Kayra Beyaz Kalecik Karasi 2015

Every month at Total Bath we'll be choosing a new wine to share with you, courtesy of our new wine expert Ben Franks from Bath-based business Novel Wines. This September we're soaking up the last of the sunshine before Autumn falls with the lovely Turkish pink Kayra Beyaz Kalecik Karasi 2015.

Ben says: "While many wineries in Turkey's vast Anatolia region can trace their history of winemaking back to ancient times, today it's harder than ever to produce wine in Turkey. Due to anti-alcohol advertising laws and a big drop in its domestic market, many wineries have turned to producing international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay or Shiraz.

"Not Kayra. Instead Kayra has reinvigorated the export market for Turkish wines by using grape varieties that are indigenous to Turkey. Famed for their Bogazkere and Okuzgozu reds and white Narince wines, the lesser-known Pinot Noir like grape Kalecik Karasi is a gem of a wine.

"In rose form, as seen in our wine of the month here, it's full of blood orange and ripe wild cherries on the nose, while the palate is tropical and mouth-watering with juicy pink grapefruit, hints of strawberry and a long, mineral finish. It's refreshing and versatile with food, a great partner with fish but also big enough to enjoy with pizza or chicken dishes.
